Nawawi’s 40 Hadith – Hadith No. 6

Clarity, Caution, and Integrity

Translation:
On the authority of Al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allahﷺsay:
“Indeed the lawful is clear, and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever avoidsthe doubtfulmatters protects his religion and his honor. Whoever falls intothe doubtfulmatters falls into the unlawful, like a shepherd grazing near a protected sanctuary who is likely to fall into it. Indeed, every king has a sanctuary, and indeed the sanctuary of Allah is His prohibitions. Indeed, in the body there is a piece of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart.”

A Universal Roadmap for Moral Clarity

This remarkable hadith lays down one of the clearest ethical frameworks in Islam:

What ishalalis unmistakably clear

What is haram is unmistakably clear

Between them aregray areasthat test a person’s sincerity, discipline, andtaqwa

These unclear matters are where one proves the seriousness of their faith. Choosing caution protects one’s spiritual integrity, reputation, and long-term moral strength.

Navigating the “Gray Areas”

The Prophetﷺteaches that the ambiguous matters reveal the inner condition of the heart:

Who chooses purity over convenience

Who values long-term clarity over momentary benefit

Who respects Allah’s boundaries

Who disciplines their desires

The shepherd analogy warns us:
Stay too close to the edges, and you eventually slip inside.

It is not the rule that fails — it is the heart that becomes careless.

A Timeless Message for Muslims Living in the West

In our context — where society normalizes ambiguity, blurs boundaries, and celebrates moral flexibility — this hadith becomes a compass for personal integrity.

Clarity in life does not come from social trends or peer approval.
It comes from:

A heart connected to Allah

Respecting what Allah has made sacred

Being cautious when things feel uncomfortable

Understanding that dignity is preserved by restraint, not risk

Living with purpose, responsibility, and self-respect

This guidance applies to our careers, friendships, business dealings, relationships, media choices, and everyday lifestyle decisions.

The Heart: The Source of Clarity

The conclusion of the hadith is the key to everything:

A sound heart makes sound decisions.
A corrupted heart confuses everything.

This means:

Faith begins inside

Temptation is resisted inside

Principles are protected inside

And a heart illuminated byimanbecomes a compass that never lies

Our greatest lifelong work is the purification of the heart.

Personal Reflection

Ask yourself:

Do I avoid doubtful matters when they compromise my peace of conscience?

Do I treat the heart as the foundation of my choices?

Do I let convenience override what I know is better?

Am I strengthening or weakening the clarity of my heart with my daily habits?

Every choice is either polishing the heart or clouding it.

Conclusion

Hadith No. 6 teaches thata clear heart leads to a clear life.
It invites us to walk with integrity, to protect our faith by respecting Allah’s boundaries, and to nurture the heart until it becomes a source of light and guidance.
